Taking an Online Course

Taking an online course?

Taking an online course can be a bit challenging the first time. We've prepared some resources in this area to help you prep are yourself and your computer system for the experience!

Getting to know VIULearn

If your online course is in VIULearn (D2L) we have a tutorial that will help you learn how to use the system. You can enroll yourself through "Discover". For more info visit this link. Once you’ve enrolled, this course will always appear in your course list and you can refer back to it at any time.

Computer system check

The D2L system check will let you know if your browser meets the requirements for using VIULearn.

Were cookies blocked?  Did you have a pop-up blocker on?  These are settings that you can change, but it’s important that you learn how to change them yourself.  Search Google to find out how!

Internet browser check

You can usually check if your browser is up to date by opening the "about" option in your settings. What is my browser? is a free online tool that will check if your current browser is up to date  If there is a newer version available it will give you a link to steps for updating your browser.

Software check

Be sure to check with your instructor what software you need for you course. There are several free software packages that you may need, but this will vary by course.

Headphones and microphone

If your course uses online classrooms you will have to listen to other people speaking, and you may end up speaking to the class. Consider buying headphones and a microphone, or headphones that have a built in microphone. This will help you hear what is happening in class and allow you to participate!

Support resources

You are the primary support resource for many of the issues you encounter when taking an online course. However, you may need some help along the way.

Can’t log in to your VIU Student Record or to VIULearn?
Your student computer account may need to be reset. If this doesn’t work, please contact StudentTechHelp@viu.ca or call 250-740-6300 for help resetting your student computer account.  IT Help is open Monday to Friday, 8am-4:30pm.

Something isn't working in VIULearn (D2L), VIUTube, VIU WordPress, or VIU Online Rooms

Please check our online help resources at https://ciel.viu.ca/pages/student-support for help. If you need help and you can't find an answer please email learnsupport@viu.ca and we will respond to you within a day, Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm.

Handling large files

Your instructor may use a format called .zip for compressing really large files.  To access the contents of a zipped folder you need to unzip it. Windows and Mac computers will have built in options for doing this. Windows uses can also download 7Zip a free tool for zipping and unzipping folders.
