Taking an online course can be a bit challenging the first time. We've prepared some resources in this area to help you prep are yourself and your computer system for the experience!
Getting to Know VIULearn
If your online course is in VIULearn (D2L) we have a tutorial that will help you learn how to use the system.You can enroll yourself through "Discover". For more info visit this link. Once you’ve enrolled, this course will always appear in your course list and you can refer back to it at any time.
Computer System Check
Click on this link to see if your current computer system is up to date.
Were cookies blocked? Did you have a pop-up blocker on? These are settings that you can change, but it’s important that you learn how to change them yourself. Search Google to find out how!
Internet Browser Check
Click on this link (whatbrowser.org) to see if your Internet browser is up to date, it is important for your online course. If your browser is out of date search Google to see how to keep it up to date!
Software Check
Be sure to check with your instructor what software you need for you course. There are several free software packages that you may need, but this will vary by course.

You are the primary support resource for many of the issues you encounter when taking an online course.However, you may need some help along the way.
Can’t log in to your VIU Student Record or to VIULearn (D2L)?
Your student computer account may need to be reset. You can try resetting it yourself by following this link (https://isapp.viu.ca/acct_maint/stu_accounts/student_accounts.asp). If this doesn’t work, please contact StudentTechHelp@viu.ca or call 250-740-6300 for help resetting your student computer account. IT Help is open Monday to Friday, 8am-4:30pm.
Something isn't working in VIULearn (D2L), VIUTube, VIU WordPress, or VIU Online Rooms
Please check our online help resources at https://ciel.viu.ca/pages/student-support for help. If you need help and you can't find an answer please email learnsupport@viu.ca and we will respond to you within a day, Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm.
Handling Large Files
Your instructor may use a format called .zip for compressing really large files. The program below will allow you to open these files. 7Zip for PC Only (http://www.7-zip.org).
