Office of Indigenous Engagement
The Office of Indigenous Education and Engagement at VIU supports Indigenous students, faculty and community members by cultivating an inclusive and culturally informed learning environment. We provide programs, services and initiatives that:
- enhance student success
- assist faculty in incorporating Indigenous perspectives into their teaching
- build strong relationships with local Indigenous communities.
Through collaboration and advocacy, we work to ensure Indigenous voices, knowledge, and traditions are respected and reflected across the university.

Shq'apthut - A Gathering Place
People of Shq’apthut
The Indigenous Student Access Coordinators help students to identify relevant resources and supports on-campus, in their community and in the municipality. Indigenous Student Access Coordinators also support student-led social activities. They work with communities and other organizations to deliver activities and workshops that equip students with tools for self-defined success. For example, students will find workshops on food sovereignty or financial aid and awards balanced with fun events like making bannock together.
The Shq’apthut Coordinator and Elder Support person ensures Shq’apthut remains a welcoming space and provides support for students, faculty, and staff seeking to connect with Elders. Shq’apthut’s new ceremonial space hosts dancing, smudging, and other work centered on furthering VIU’s Indigenous Commitments.
