Adult Basic Education Programs

Adult Basic Education programs provide High School equivalent courses up to the grade 12 level in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Studies, English, History, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, Science, Education and Career Planning, and Reading and Writing.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses are for adults who want to:

  • complete prerequisite courses needed for further study at the University level;
  • obtain a High School graduation certificate;
  • refresh their skills and confidence as they prepare for employment or University studies.

Foundations for Success Courses

VIU offers six, three-credit Foundations for Success courses that are designed to support students as they transition into post-secondary programs. Students may take one or all of these courses, but only a maximum of 3 academic credits (one single Foundations for Success course) may be used towards a credential at VIU.

The Foundations for Success courses include:

  • Writing for Success
  • Reading, Speaking and Presentation Skills
  • Finding careers that Fit: Exploring meaningful education and career paths
  • Succeeding Online: Tools and Technologies for Learning
  • Solving Calculus Problems
  • Elements of Anatomy and Physiology: Techniques for success in Health Sciences
