The VIUSU operates Bookswap - Used Book Service as well. Check it out at the VIU Students' Union, Building 193!

Each campus has its own VIU bookstore that carries the books for courses only at that campus. For example, Cowichan bookstore carries books for courses that are offered at Cowichan. Or, you can purchase your books online and they will be sent to you, with additional shipping charges. You can purchase all of your required textbooks through the VIU Bookstore. They even have a tool that compares their prices to top online retailers, so you know you are getting the best price!

You can also consider buying used books. Used books are a less expensive alternative for students (25% less than new). Students who buy new and used books can, in many cases, sell them back to the VIU Bookstore.


The VIU Bookstore also offers some supplies that you may need or want when you are on campus. The VIU Bookstore offers educational pricing on many items (like computer products and software) so make sure to check the prices they offer before purchasing any expensive products.

All VIU campuses have computer labs available for students to use. More information about computer lab locations and hours. You may not need to purchase your own computer!

The VIUSU will provide a Students’ Union handbook and dayplanner to students for free! Wait, don't purchase an agenda book before checking this out first! You can usually pick up your copy at one of the New Student Orientation events.

The supplies you’ll need will depend on what program you are attending, but there are some basic items most students should consider purchasing:

  • Backpack
  • Pens or Pencils and Erasers
  • Notebooks or Paper
  • Highlighters
  • USB drive
  • Calendar or Planner
