Volunteer Tutor Program
Volunteer Tutor Program - Cowichan Campus
Free tutoring is offered as a support to any VIU student in any subject, including adult upgrading courses, trades and certificate programs, and university courses. The focus is usually academic, but sometimes students request tutors to help them “stay on track” or “talk things over with.” Tutoring is not the primary form of course delivery. The ultimate goal of tutoring is to help students become independent, efficient learners.
Volunteer Tutors are community members who have an interest in education and wish to support students in their educational pursuits. Many tutors are retired professionals who bring with them a wealth of experience and expertise.
Students seeking tutoring are either self-referred, or are referred by faculty and staff. The intake process involves a Tutor Request form and a conversation with the Volunteer Tutor Program coordinator to establish why a tutor is needed and who would be the best match.
If you are interested in becoming a Volunteer Tutor, you can put your name on an interest list by phoning Student Affairs at (250) 746-3509. The program coordinator will return your call, advise you of the next training session, and arrange an on-site interview.
