Request a VIUOnline Rooms Account

All faculty and staff at VIU can request an account with VIUOnline Rooms (powered by Zoom). In order to request an account, please send an email to learnsupport@viu.ca. To ensure we set you up with the best account type for your needs and to help us support your usage, please include a brief description of what you anticipate you will be doing with VIUOnline Rooms. For example, you may be planning virtual office hours, running department meetings, or teaching an entire course through web conferencing.

The UnMarking Studio: Balancing Student Needs with Faculty Realities September 13, 2018 - 4:12pm

How much marking is optimal? How many assignments are best for student learning? Could we mark and grade less yet still be respectable? Or more surprising yet: Could less marking and fewer grades be causally related to more student learning? These are just a few of the inquiries you are invited to explore with your VIU colleagues in a “studio” format.

Leading Virtual Classes: Enhanced Use of VIU’s Web Conferencing Platform (Zoom) September 13, 2018 - 4:05pm

This is the second of two sessions about using VIUOnline Rooms and assumes that you have some experience using the platform to engage your students.

This session focuses on supporting your learners using VIUOnline Rooms. We will review, share, and discuss the various ways which you are using the tool and explore best practices for supporting and engaging students in the VIUOnline Rooms environment.

Questions are encouraged!

The Tao of Marking: Finding Joy by “De-Complicating” Grades and Feedback September 13, 2018 - 3:47pm

We care deeply about our students—that’s why we teach. But caring for our students can also lead us to adopt practices that are non-sustainable and maybe even joyless, such as long weekends bent over papers, grading sessions that extend into the holidays, or hours crunching numbers to produce final course marks. If these behaviours are the result of our caring, we have to begin questioning “why?” Why has it been possible for our caring to displace our pleasure and satisfaction as educators. Where did the fun go, and what can we do to get it back?
